Health Center

I am looking to be seen by a doctor. Do I qualify for your clinic?

We see uninsured adults (19 years to 64) in our clinic, so if you fall into this category we can see you in our Acute Care Clinic.

On what days/times do you see new patients?

We see new patients in our Acute Care Clinic which is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Our registration period is between 3:00 and 5:30 p.m. and patients are seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

What do I need to bring with me when I visit your clinic?

We require three things when you visit our clinic for the first time.

  • A photo I.D.
  • Household proof of income (not only your income, but the entire household’s income)
    • * If you are unemployed, we need the income for whoever is supporting or providing for you
    • * If you are a resident in a shelter, we need proof of residency from your shelter (a letter or email stating that you are a resident)
    • * Household income includes pay stubs, tax returns, W-2 forms, 1099 forms, social security letters, disability letters, and food stamp letters. Please bring ALL forms of household income if you wish to qualify for our Dispensary.

Do you fill prescriptions from outside providers?

No, we only fill prescriptions from our physicians and if you qualify for medications from our Dispensary.

Do you provide dental care?

No, we only provide primary care

When and Where do I take my GED test?

Your GED success begins right where you are. On average GED students spend 1 year in our program, though many students attend classes for more than a year. The official GED test sections (math, English, science, and social studies) are proctored at local community colleges and students take the tests one subject at a time. We assist students in signing up for the test sections through the GED Testing Service website. Students sign up for test sections at community college locations most convenient to them.

When are your classes?

We offer Literacy tutoring for students who score below 4th grade reading.  Literacy students meet one-on-one with their tutors for 90 minutes a week.  These sessions can be at M-POWER or in a public location such as a library.

Our classes meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 to 2:00 at M-POWER.  Students scoring between 5th and 8th grade are in our Pathways Program.  Students above 9th grade are in our GED program.  Classes for both Pathways and GED are geared towards the GED, although, not all of our Pathways students will obtain a GED.  Classes are year-round but we do divide them into three terms.

What if I only want to do classes one day a week?

Our program is not drop-in. We expect students who enroll to attend the all our classes. At this time we do not offer evening classes.

How do I get started?

Call the Education Center at (205) 401-8573 to sign up for the GAIN pretest assessment. Your scores will be available immediately and we will talk to you about program enrollment once your test is complete. You will need to bring a valid, state-issued photo ID on the day of your pretest.

How much does it cost?

All of our programs are free to all students. M-POWER pays all test fees, and provides all materials to students who are enrolled.
